Bacteria Overgrowth Could Be Major Cause of Stunting in Children

22 February 2016

There was an interesting headline from a research venture between the US and Bangledesh, "Bacteria Overgrowth Could Be Major Cause of Stunting in Children”. This is a fascinating study given our own experiences with many of our customers who have suffered with bacteria overgrowth in the gut. We’ve worked with customers from all over the world with Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). The effects can be wide ranging depending on the age of the patient, the age at onset and how severe the problem is. The above-referenced report focused on a particular outcome from SIBO, stunted growth.

"One possible factor contributing to stunting is damage to the gut – ‘environmental enteropathy’ – leading to inflammation and poor uptake of dietary nutrients. The origins of environmental enteropathy are not clear, but excessive numbers of bacteria in the small intestine, referred to as small intestine bacterial overgrowth, or SIBO, have been suggested as one possible cause.”

This is becoming a growing issue for many individuals given a wide range of issues. Understanding and treating bacterial overgrowth can be complex. But, there are many things you can do to begin assessing the situation and working with your physician or practitioner to develop a plan for treatment. A great start is to read Dr. Kurt Woeller’s article on this topic to get a better understanding. Our Organic Acids Test (OAT) is a very valuable test for SIBO. Dr. Woeller discusses the usefulness of the OAT in diagnosing and treating SIBO in the webinar below.

"Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) – Causes, Treatments, and Using the Organic Acids Tests" by Dr. Woeller from The Great Plains Laboratory on Vimeo.

Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth can be very problematic for a number of people but it can be treated with accurate diagnosis and treatment by a knowledgeable practitioner. We carry a wide variety of products to help support optimal gut health and reduce SIBO.

Probiotics can help recolonize the gut with good bacteria which in turn can help crowd out the bad bacteria. For a more targeted approach, your physician or practitioner can guide you on the type of probiotic most suited to your needs with the help of lab testing. Botanicals can provide potent and effective anti-bacterial activity. For example, Biocidinis a broad-spectrum botanical combination which addresses the G.I tract and supports a healthy and balanced intestinal ecology. It comes in capsuleform as well as liquid. There are many more products that can be effective against SIBO. Work with your physician or practitioner to determine the best approach.
