Dealing with the stress of Autism

28 February 2013

Ah yes, the topic of stress and parenting your child with Autism. We are all there, have been there. When I read this article on www.theautismnews.com I had a few feelings initially. First off, I wish the topic of RECOVERY would finally get more attention already. How many of us does it take talking about TREATING the underlying issues in Autism for the world (i.e. mainstream doctors and therapists) to get that children are getting better not just from ABA and getting older. OK so once I moved past that point of frustration I thought back to when life was really intense.

Some of the suggestions are good, getting out, asking for help, etc. But what if you have no support system. Many don't. Whether you live far away from family, whether family is just not supportive, whether you cannot afford a qualified sitter, etc. There are many reasons why parents cannot get out for time themselves. We lucked out, we have a phenomenal respite provider before we moved last year. She was so loved and loving that she really became like a member of the family. But not every family has that. And I was pretty paranoid about even leaving my child with anyone until he was a certain age. Do we need time out? Yes. But what if your "time out" is spent worrying as mine used to be. That really does no good. So what are your strategies??

Now, on a different vein, let's focus on what you CAN control. You cannot always control how much sleep you (or your child) gets. Lets face it, Autism is no picnic most days and I know the first 4 years of my son's life I was lucky to get 4 hours of sleep a night. What impact does that have on our bodies? Well for one it puts a lot of stress on the adrenals. So does, well, STRESS. Just recently I have started to focus on rebuilding my adrenals and trying to undo a little of the damage. One was we can help ourselves is to remember our own supplements. I use the One n Only and I have started using the AdrenalEssence as well as the CalmEssence. It has only been about a week so I will let you know how it goes. But one thing I have become committed to is replenishing my body. I'm an Autism mom, I NEED to be around as long as I can for my child.
