The dark side of common childhood medications

17 February 2016

It seems that everyday brings a new story or research about toxicity and chemicals and their impact to our growing children. This week was saw more research emerge about Acetaminophen (trade name Tylenol) and prenatal use being linked to Asthma. Dr. Shaw, Director of The Great Plains Laboratory, did a paper in 2013 on the impact of Acetaminophen on the growing numbers we see with asthma, ADHD and Autism. His paper can be read here. So what is a parent to do?

Less is more. The less medications and toxins we expose our children to, the less reactions they may have. That is the most logical explanation. But how does one get through childhood without reaching for some of these medications which can have hefty side effects? Immune support can be a great first step. Whether we are speaking of reducing sugars in the diet since it impacts immune function, adding in lots of fresh fruits and vegetables for their vitamin, mineral and antioxidant properties or adding in supplements when needed, small steps can make a big impact.

But you might say "I have a picky eater who refuses fruits and vegetables". We see this commonly. There is a lot of guidance out there about getting even picky eaters to eat more veggies. But if you feel that your child needs additional support, that is our area of expertise. A multi-vitamin/multi-mineral is a great first start! Our Spectrum-Mate is a wonderful option that comes in both capsules and powder so it is easy to give, even to children who cannot swallow pills.

We also carry an immune formula which can help support optimal immune functioning in your child.

One of the most empowering things as a parent is to know that there are options out there and you just have to find the right solution for your child. We at New Beginnings Nutritionals are here to help support you and your family's health and wellness.
